Letter: Repaving of Route 30 should last many years

In Laurie Bent’s Oct.  9 Letter to the Editor published in the Weston Observer, our former Select Board member appears woefully uninformed about the Route 30 “Reconstruction” project.  Ms. Bent states “The road [Route 30] will soon have to be repaved.” This is FALSE. In 2023 the state repaved almost the entire length of Route 30.

According to the project engineers, Howard Stein Hudson (HSH), this repaving should last 20 years with proper maintenance. Here is the HSH response to a March 13, 2025 email from Mr. Lou Mercuri:

“In 2023, MassDOT paved approximately 3.75 miles of Route 30 in Weston from the town limit at Wayland to Mile Marker 27.85 (near Cutter’s Bluff). That resurfacing project included removing and replacing 2″ of hot mix asphalt, which is a standard resurfacing treatment. With frequent crack seal applications and additional appropriate maintenance treatments every 3-7 years, this section of road could last 20+ years before another resurfacing project is required.”

Town residents should understand that the repaving argument is a deceptive tactic to justify this unsafe and environmentally disastrous project.
