Letter: National Day of the Deployed
Coming from a military family where my brothers have been deployed throughout their careers in conflicts around the world, I would like to bring this day to light for our community and recognize our military’s sacrifices who are overseas and their families who support them.
This observance traces back to shine a light on the dedication and responsibilities carried by those stationed far from home, ensuring their service is never overlooked. The observance began in 2006 through the grassroots efforts of Shelle Michaels Aberle, a volunteer with the support organization Soldiers & Angels. Aberle who wanted a way to honor her cousin, Lt. Col. David Hosna, deployed to Iraq at the time, alongside all other active-duty service members.
This day is deeply important because it provides a dedicated nationwide platform to express gratitude, honor their unwavering commitment to protecting our safety, and acknowledge the sacrifices that military families make every day. Recognizing these heroes goes beyond mere reflection; active involvement can make a significant difference in the lives of our service members.
We can honor deployed troops by participating in donation drives or utilizing organizations like Any Soldier Inc. and Operation: Military Matters to send care packages and letters. Writing a personal letter or assembling a care package helps boost troop morale, brings much-needed connection, and reminds those stationed overseas that they are remembered, valued, and deeply appreciated by the nation they protect every single day. Donate to other organizations like the USO, Operation Homefront, Blue Star Families to help our military families.
Please send letters and care packages, directly to Operation: Military Matters 9355 113th St. #8132, Seminole, FL 33775. Please do not send boxes more than 70 lbs.
