School Committee, Rec Commission top ballot

While the School Committee and Recreation Commission feature contested races in Weston’s May 2 annual election, the uncontested Select Board race still looms large on the ballot.

Voters in January approved a ballot question to expand Weston’s Select Board from three members to five. More than four years after the Select Board expansion effort began, residents will have the opportunity to seat three new Select Board members at the ballot box on Saturday. Voters will also consider incumbent Adam Newman and Steve Dietz for a three-year School Committee position, as well as four candidates for three Recreation Commission terms.

The election will be held in the auditorium at Town Hall, 11 Town House Road, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The three Select Board candidates are Al Aydelott, Rebecca Mercuri, and Anupam Sachdev. Although the race is uncontested, there are still some stakes, as term lengths will be determined by the number of votes candidates receive. The top two vote-getters will serve three-year terms, while the person with the fewest number of votes will serve a two-year term.

For the School Committee, Dietz is challenging incumbent Chair Newman for a three-year term. Newman, a former teacher and now education strategy consultant, is focused on using his industry background to help the School Committee handle financial strains, evolving technology and the building project. Dietz, who works in the technology industry and will have one student at each school level this fall, wants to represent the community, especially those with children in elementary school, on the School Committee, foster fiscal transparency and prepare for future growth.

The Recreation Commission is Weston’s other contested race, with four residents running for three three-year terms. The candidates are incumbent Chikaebere Toure, George Manley, Arthur Gibson and Nicholas Warren.

The full election ballot is as follows:

• Moderator, one-year term – Ripley Hastings, incumbent.
• Select Board, two three-year terms and one two-year term – Anupam Sachdev, Alfred Aydelott, Rebecca Mercuri.
• Assessors, two three-year terms – Tamilyn Liesenfeld and John Hennessy, both incumbents.
• Recreation Commission, three three-year terms – Chikaebere Toure, incumbent, George Manley, Arthur Gibson and Nicholas Warren.
• Planning Board, five-year term – Adrienne Giske.
• Library Trustees, two three-year terms – Joseph Mullin and Emma Kwon, both incumbents.
• Board of Health, three-year term – Diana Chaplin, incumbent.
• Commissioner of Trust Funds, three-year term – Kevin O’Connell, incumbent.
• Measurers of Lumber, three one-year terms – Daniel McDonald, incumbent, Alan Day and Julie Hyde.
