Kathleen Baker appointed as interim Middle School principal

Weston Public Schools Director of World Languages Kathleen Baker has been appointed as interim middle school principal for the 2026-27 school year following the resignation of Philip Oates.

Oates, a veteran nine-year Weston Public Schools administrator, unexpectedly submitted his resignation, effective June 30. His resignation was announced by Superintendent Karen Zaleski in a letter to the Middle School community on Wednesday, June 24, the last day of the 2025-26 school year.

In a brief phone call Oates said he needs to spend more time with his family and that he “couldn’t be more appreciative of all the people I’ve met” at Weston Public Schools.

Zaleski, in a July 6 letter to the community, said Baker, who has been with the district since 2001, has “continually gone above and beyond” for students, and she will be supported by the team at the Case House, as well as her colleagues at the middle school.

“This collaborative leadership team remains committed to maintaining continuity, supporting staff and students and providing the high-quality educational experience our community expects,” Zaleski wrote. “I am confident that her experience, dedication and leadership will serve our middle school community exceptionally well during the coming school year.”

Middle School Assistant Principal Brian Buck is also leaving the district. Oates announced at the eighth grade Moving On Ceremony on June 23 that Buck is returning to Arlington Public Schools, leaving both head administrator positions vacant entering the summer.

Zaleski wrote in her letter that Oates, who served as assistant principal for six years before spending the last three as principal, “worked tirelessly to foster a positive school culture, support staff and create a welcoming environment where all members of the community felt seen and valued.”

“His contributions to the school community reflect his commitment to educational leadership and student success,” the letter states. “His willingness to engage with students beyond the classroom helped strengthen connections and school pride. Phil also championed efforts to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, helping advance opportunities for dialogue, understanding, and respect among students and staff. His leadership contributed to a culture that encouraged participation, collaboration, and a strong sense of community.”

The district announced that it is currently working on a transition plan.

Oates has been an educator for more than two decades, teaching math at Watertown Public Schools for nine years, serving as interim principal at J.R. Lowell Elementary in Watertown for a year and two years at Cambridge High School Extension Program, according to the Watertown News. In 2023, the Massachusetts School Administrators’ Association named Oates its Assistant Principal of the Year.
