Letter: Support Dietz for School Committee

The Weston school district, like many districts today, is at an inflection point. The decisions our School Committee makes in the coming years about technology, leadership, facilities, and how we prepare students for a rapidly changing world, will shape this district for a generation. These decisions require sound judgment, a genuine commitment to listening, and a clear focus on what is best for students.

Weston is fortunate to have talented educators whose expertise drives what happens in our classrooms every day. Our educators provide expertise; the School Committee must provide judgment, oversight, and a clear voice for the community.

Steve Dietz brings exactly that. As a parent of four children in Weston Public Schools—one at each level of the district—he approaches this role with humility and rigor. He understands that excellence is not self-sustaining; it requires thoughtful stewardship and leadership that knows when to act and when to step back.

Steve has been clear about his priorities: maintaining high standards, balancing investments in our schools with fiscal sustainability, using technology to support (not disrupt) learning, and approaching upcoming facilities decisions with care, transparency, and long-term thinking.

I am grateful to Adam Newman for his service on the School Committee. At the same time, he sends his children to private school rather than Weston Public Schools. I believe there is real value, particularly during this period of rapid change, in representation from someone closely connected to Weston Public Schools day to day. It shapes the information he has, the questions he asks, and the perspectives he considers. Steve is deeply connected to the district through his four children, whose experiences will inform his decisions—decisions they will also live with.

Lived experience alone isn’t enough, but paired with sound judgment, it will lead to better, more grounded decisions. For Steve, these choices aren’t theoretical—they’re real.

Weston’s schools are exceptional. Sustaining that excellence requires steady, thoughtful, well-informed leadership. For the future of Weston’s students, I hope you will support Steve Dietz at Weston Town Hall on May 2.
