Championships highlight Weston sports weekend
Weston Athletics claimed two state championships over Presidents’ Day weekend.

It was an especially busy holiday weekend for Weston High School’s athletic programs.
Teamwork was the name of the game for the Wildcats, whose comeback efforts helped them secure two state championships Feb. 13 and 14.
Indoor track completes comeback
The indoor track state championship meet at the Track at New Balance in Boston kicked off the weekend. The boys team, fresh off winning a Dual County League championship, finished sixth overall.
The girls, on the other hand, pulled off a comeback against Wayland. After a strong day, the Wildcats entered the final event, the 4×4 relay, trailing their rival, but still in striking distance.
That’s when Anne Moser, Izzy Wheeler, Leksi Sullivan and Jessica Bourne stepped in. The quartet of runners, who had just finished first in the 4×800 relay, finished second in the 4×400 and outran Wayland to capture the Division 4 state title, 49 to 36.

Girls Swim & Dive hoist another title
As the defending state champion, the girls swimming and diving team entered the Feb. 14 state championship meet at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a big target on its back.
The Wildcats again prevailed to win the state crown for the third year in a row – even though they did not win a single event.
Rival Wayland led for the vast majority of the meet, and just like on the indoor track the night before, Weston again pulled ahead in the final event to defeat their rivals. With the title on the line, Ariel Wang, Madeline Young, Kate Krueger and Philina Zhou swam their way to second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay, which was just enough to overtake Wayland, which finished third in the event, in the overall standings.
It is the third consecutive Division 2 championship for Weston’s girls’ swim/dive team, and players and coaches marked the occasion by diving into the pool for a celebratory splash.
Boys Swim & Dive are state runners-up
While the boys swim/dive team did not take home the hardware, the team put together a strong finish to fend off Mystic Valley for a second-place finish in the Division 2 state championship, which was also held at MIT.
The Wildcats battled with Wayland and Mystic Valley all afternoon for the top spot. While Wayland ultimately cruised to a title, Weston and Mystic Valley battled down to the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Sam Whitworth, Andrew Pettinato, Jerry Liu and Aiden Lawlor was able to fend off Mystic Valley in the relay as the Wildcats secured second place, 263.5 to 262.
