Residents are advised to change their login passwords to the town’s emergency alert system following a cybersecurity breach on Nov. 22.

Town officials report that CodeRED, Weston’s emergency alert provider, experienced a cybersecurity incident over the weekend. Town Manager Leon Gaumond said usernames and passwords in the CodeRED system were accessed by the cybercriminals.

Town systems were untouched, but Gaumond recommended changing login information if residents use the same email and password for other platforms.

“If you use the same login and credentials for other things, you might want to change them because people will be able to hack into those systems,” he said. “We remind people not to use passwords across different systems.”

CodeRED is used across the country for emergency alerts.

After Weston Town Hall was alerted to the security breach on Saturday, the advisory message was sent to residents. The message also stated the town is in the process of changing emergency alert providers and details will be provided as they become available.
