Here we go again: Weston High School theater returns with “Mamma Mia!”

Weston High School is inviting the community to a wedding weekend on a Greek island with its production of “Mamma Mia!” opening later this month.

“I wanted a fun show more than anything to kick off the year,” said Anne Isaacs, director of the school’s theater program.

“Mamma Mia!,” a jukebox musical using the work of ABBA, follows Sophie, a young woman about to get married. She wants her father to walk her down the aisle, so she invites her three potential fathers – whom she has never met – to the wedding, without telling her mother, Donna, or her fiancé, Sky.

Leah Berger, one of the student co-presidents of the school’s Theater Company, is playing Tanya, one of Donna’s friends.

“It’s such a fun role to play,” Berger said. “It’s such a great example of female friendship.”

She added that she loves the theatrical traditions bonding students at Weston High School, including dressing up the week before the first rehearsal and swapping gifts before the show.

Sebastian Smith, a student leader in the show’s ensemble, said that getting to spend time with students from different grade levels and social groups was a highlight of participating in the school musical.

“The greatest part of being in theater is meeting a variety of people you wouldn’t meet,” Smith said. “It’s such a fun thing to do. Performing, there’s no other feeling in my opinion.”

Beyond getting to perform, students are able to learn a variety of other skills. Smith is in charge of publicity for the show as a member of the company’s board. He keeps track of rehearsal photos and makes posts on social media.

Curtis Keene, who is playing Sam Carmichael and is one of the co-presidents, said in his role as a student leader, he helps communicate between students and staff.

“It’s about promoting that positive space where it’s okay to make a mistake and have fun and grow a community,” Keene said. “A lot of the big idea is just making sure things run smoothly and being an intermediary between the rest of the cast and the administration and Ms. Isaacs.”

Students are also active backstage as members of the crew and orchestra. Chris Memoli, the pit director, said being able to be part of the show is a great learning opportunity, especially for a show with almost 30 songs.

“It’s a lot to learn,” he said. “I wanted to have a student pit because it’s an educational experience to be in the pit, and they learn so much.”

Isaacs is working to bring former students together with current members of the theater company. She has created an alumni association for former theater students; its members will meet with current students during the week of the show.

“It would be great to have the resources for students who are passionate and know they want to do this professionally,” Isaacs said. “Being a product of the Weston schools, the community means a lot to me.”

“Mamma Mia!” runs on Nov. 20 and 21 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and older adults. They can be reserved online or purchased at the door, pending availability.
