WeStar candidate forum to ‘bridge’ community

WeStar, the nonprofit serving Weston’s Chinese community, is hosting its first candidate forum at the end of the month, ahead of the town election.

Candidates for the Select Board, School Committee and Planning Board will take questions on April 30 from the Chinese community. Tiao Xie, a member of the School Committee, will interpret. The forum will take place at the Case House, 89 Wellesley St., from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 30.

WeStar President Nancy Nie said she hopes the event will help bring Weston’s English-speaking and Mandarin-speaking communities together.

“I’m doing what I can to become a bridge,” she said.

The first half hour of the event will include explanations as to how town government functions.

WeStar hosts community events throughout the year, including Lunar New Year celebrations and an Asian music festival in the summer.

WeStar vice president Katy Bai said she hopes this event will make it easier for residents in town to participate in local government.

“We want to encourage more Chinese people to take part in the community,” she said.
