Letter: Support the Nature for MA ballot initiative
Weston High School 10th grader Sahana Krishnan advocates for the Nature for MA ballot initiative.

With the Weston Special Town Meeting fast approaching next week, I would like to use this opportunity to raise awareness and gather signatures for the Protect Water and Nature Initiative, led by the Nature for Massachusetts (Nature for MA) coalition. This initiative, if voted into law, would dedicate a small portion of the state’s existing sales tax on sporting goods (so no new taxes!) to create a steady $100 million per year fund for protecting clean water, preserving forests, restoring wetlands, and expanding access to parks and trails.
Throughout my childhood, I have felt fortunate to be able to spend time outdoors on Weston’s beautiful trails, such as Cat Rock Park and the Reservoir Walking Trail, to name a few. We’re lucky to have these natural spaces, but many communities across Massachusetts don’t. The Nature for MA fund would help make sure everyone—no matter where they live in MA—has safe and healthy outdoor spaces. It would also help the state meet its goal to protect 30% of land and waters by 2030 and 40% by 2050.
So, if you’re planning on attending the Weston Special Town Meeting on Oct. 15, please stop by a few minutes early to sign the petition. Every signature helps move this initiative closer to the statewide ballot in November 2026.
Thank you for supporting a greener, healthier Massachusetts! (Learn more at www.natureforma.org)
