Letter: Celebrate Flag Day, June 14

Celebrate Flag Day, June 14

As the calendar turns toward June, the quiet, tree-lined streets of Weston and the surrounding Metrowest communities are finding themselves at the epicenter of a historic crossroads. This year, the annual tradition of Flag Day, June, carries a weightier significance, serving as a preamble to the United States’ 250th Anniversary.

While the national holiday honors the 1777 adoption of the Stars and Stripes, towns like Weston trace their civic identity back to the farmers and families who stood at the ready in 1775. As we celebrate the semiquincentennial, the flag serves as a visual bridge between that revolutionary past and our present-day community.

With the region preparing for the major summer festivities of the 250th, neighboring Dedham continues its storied tradition with the 59th Annual Flag Day Parade. This year’s procession is expected to be a highlight of the regional MA250 initiative, drawing families from across the county to witness a vibrant display of patriotism and community pride.

Beyond the parades and picnics, the 250th anniversary invites us to reflect on the flag’s evolving symbolism. In the context of our local history—where the Bunker Hill Flag once flew just a few miles east—the Stars and Stripes represent our liberty and freedom. This June, as red, white, and blue bunting adorns our historic sites, homes and town greens, we are reminded that the American story is not a finished book, but a tapestry we continue to weave together. Wave your Stars & Stripes!
