Candidate Statement: Al Aydelott

I’ve been a Weston resident since 1971. It’s a special place with a unique spirit that I hope we can preserve for future generations.

My daughters are a neuroscientist and a wildlife geneticist, and my grandchildren are both in college. My wife Adrienne is also an architect and my partner in business and in life.

My education includes a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, a masters degree from Harvard and a Fulbright Grant in Europe to study post-war rebuilding and rehabilitation.

As an architect, I’ve been involved in projects of all types and sizes, including the Alaska Pipeline North Slope Base Camp, the Porter Square MBTA station, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the Charles Hotel complex in Cambridge.

My firm specializes in restoration of historic buildings, affordable and accessible housing, capital needs assessments, medical and general office facilities, land planning, and single-family homes. Our work includes many homes and other buildings in Weston. I was executive vice president for property management and development at the Mount Washington Hotel and a state building inspector of Massachusetts rental voucher program residences.

In Weston, I’ve served for 41 years on the Historical Commission, as chair of the Crescent Street Historic District Commission for 32 years and for 23 years on the Planning Board, 17 as chair.

I’m a member of the Case Building and the MBTA 3A working groups and a recipient of the Carter Medal for community service.

I believe that my educational background and experience in land planning, zoning, regulations, public and private construction, historic preservation, affordable housing, and property management will help the Select Board address the daunting challenges that the town faces today. I’m ready to give it my best effort.
