Antisemitic incident reported at Weston Middle School

Weston Public School officials and the Weston Police Department are looking into a reported antisemitic incident at Weston Middle School this week.

Officials sent a letter to Middle School families this week reporting that a student copied and pasted an image of a swastika onto a computer screen for a short period of time during an eighth grade class activity. Upon becoming aware of the incident, the Middle School contacted administrators and reported the finding to the Weston Police Department. Additionally, the district is offering in-school services to impacted students.

Superintendent Karen Zaleski said it is the district’s policy to collaborate with law enforcement when such incidents occur and that each one is addressed individually.

“In general, we as an administration work closely with other town departments (in this case, it was the Police Department) and other organizations as appropriate,” Zaleski said. “Thankfully, incidents like this are not frequent, so each is handled on a case-by-case basis to ensure that we are sensitive to those impacted.”

The district has also reported the incident to the Anti-Defamation League and will receive guidance on how to address it with students.

“Administration and staff will remain in collaboration regarding this incident,” she said. “Additionally, we are working with the ADL to provide student education. We want to extend our gratitude to the members of our community who reached out to offer support.”
