Firefighters knock down Highland Street fire

Weston firefighters and five mutual aid departments Monday night knocked down a fire on Highland Street Monday, which resulted in no injuries, but damage to the residence.

Fire Chief Justin Woodside said first responders were called to 375 Highland St. around 9:37 p.m. for a reported fire in the residence. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke, and saw fire originating from the stove and up into the cooking hood.

From there, the fire was found in the walls and ceiling above, traveling to the second floor of the residence.

“Most of it was hidden,” Woodside said, noting firefighters needed to cut drywall out of the closet to reach the blaze. “The homeowner was evaluated but denied transport to the hospital, so it all worked out pretty good; given the circumstances, it could have been a lot worse.”

Woodside said there wasn’t a “ton of exterior damage,” but 30 minutes of burning inside caused some damage to the internal structure, and it will likely have to be reframed.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday. The Wellesley, Wayland, Waltham, Newton and Natick fire departments provided mutual aid.
